There are a few important hardware items & tools you’ll need to successfully install your new interior door.
- Prehung door
- Level
- Shims
- Hammer

- Utility knife
- Chisel

Start with measuring your door frame to make sure you purchase the correct size prehung door. Then remove the old door by taking out the hinge pins using a nail punch and hammer. Unscrew the hinge brackets from the door jamb and lift the door out of the frame.

Steps for installing an interior door:
- Slide the prehung door into the rough opening.
- Use a level to ensure the door is even. Add shims as necessary to adjust.
- Once the door is level, nail the door frame to the studs using finishing nails.
- Score and remove any excess shims with a utility knife.
- If your new door isn’t pre-drilled, use the old door as a guide to mark hinge placements.
- Use a chisel and utility knife to score and create mortises for the hinges.
- For the doorknob and latch, a door lock installation jig can be helpful. Use it to bore holes for the latch and lever.
- Install the latch and lever following the manufacturer’s instructions.
